Three Ways to Reduce Blank Failures for BOD

The most difficult part of BOD testing is achieving a good blank with oxygen depletion less than 0.2 mg/L. Poor Dissolved Oxygen measurement, insufficiently cleaned bottles, and poor quality water all can lead to high blanks. Three tips to reduce your blank failures include:
1. Measure with a Luminescent Dissolved Oxygen probe. The Hach LBOD probe can reduce blank measurement standard deviation by 0.04 mg/L when compared to traditional Dissolved Oxygen probes.
2. Use disposable bottles to lower blank results by 0.04 mg/L by eliminating sample carryover issues as well as saving you the time and energy to clean glass bottles.
3. Implement a water purification system to improve blank quality by 0.05 mg/L. Using tap water can lead to 12 blank failures/year, and DI water can lead to 3 failures/year.
